Son of Stephen Darlington and Ann Mendenhall. He married Hannah Tussey on October 29, 1857. They were the parents of Lucy, Jane, Whittier, Anne, and Emlen. In 1853 he published a small volume of poems entitled "A Token of Esteem and Remembrance for my Young Friends at School".
