JOHN K LOOMIS
In the News yesterday appeared a brief notice of the death of John K. Loomis, which occurred at noon in the Delaware Hospital, Wilmington. Mr. Loomis, who was in his 69th year, had been hurt the previous afternoon while boarding a trolley car. A fractious horse had been maneuvering about the car and it is supposed that the end of the shaft struck Mr. Loomis on the side of the head, causing a fatal injury.
He was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Loomis, of Grove, West Whiteland Township, and he was born at Falls of the French Creek, in Warwick Township. In 1872 he came to West Chester with George R. Hoops and assisted in the grain business. He also worked for Thomas Beaumont in this borough, the stand being on North Walnut Street, where Norris B. Slack is now located. Later he was with Hempill Brothers, who had a business stand at the northwest corner of Market and Walnut Streets, and he was with them when they built a warehouse and mill on Gay Street, east of the railroad.
In the year 1850 he moved to Wilmington and for a time was employed on the trolley cars as a conductor but later became a watchman at the Third Street crossing which cost his life.
His record is one of faithfulness uprightness and sincerity. Being a member of the Bandywine Methodist Episcopal Church, in Wilmington and Thompson Lodge, No. 340, Free and Accepted Masons, of Duffrin Mawr, he surrounded himself by those influences which counted in character building and made his life true.
Marrying Susanna Townsend, of Grove, he and she reared a family of children by virtuous precept and example. She survives him with five of their sons: Frank O., of West Chester, who has long been a lino-type operator on the Daily Local News; Ruel S., George H., Esau H. and Dallett H., of Wilmington. There are also three grandchildren. These are the brothers and sisters: Elizabeth, wife of Richard T. Meredith, of Kirkland Station; Mary, wife of Edward Wirth of Downingtown; Miss Sarah Loomis, West Barnard Street, West Chester; Isaiah Loomis, Street Commissioner of Spring City, and William Loomis of Norristown.
