Notes for Anne WILLING

born in 1764, was a leading society figure in Philadelphia who entertained leaders of the newly born United States of America, She was siad to be the most beautiful woman of her time and to have been the model for the famous Lady Liberty Draped Bust portrait on the American silver dollars and other United States coinage minted between 1796 and 1804, one coin of which is on the display in the St. Peter's vestry. In 1800, sometime after the birth of her third child, Anne contracted a serious illness, likely tuberculosis. Accompanied by serveral members of her family, she set sail for Madeira in search of a more favoraable climate, but died in Bermuda on 11 May 1801, aged 37 years.
