Notes for John Howard PEW

J. Howard Pew. 1882-1971. Graduate Grove City College, age 18. Joined father's company, 1901. Developed commercial uses for new Spindletop crude oil; assistant superintendent and vice president. President of company, 1912-1947; developed Sun Shipbuilding Co. He and brother Joe made Sun Oil a giant industry. Residence: "Knollbrook", Ardmore.

From 1930 genealogical notes of Alfred R. Justice:

"He was educated at Shadyside Academy, Pittsburgh, PA and Grove City College, Grove City, PA, and later took a course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"He commenced his business career in 1901, as an engineer in the Sun Company's refinery at Marcus Hook, PA, subsequently filling successively the positions of assistant manager, manager, vice president, and in the year 1912 was elected president of the Sun Company (now the Sun Oil Company) succeeding his father in that position, which he fill at the present time.
"In 1916, the Sun Shipbuilding Company, which is now the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, was formed and a new shipbuilding plant was built at Chester, PA., under Mr. Pew's direct supervision, and he served as president of the Company until 1918, when he resigned, continuing, however, to serve on its Board of Directors. He is a Director of the Philadelphia Girard National Bank, and of the American Petroleum Institute, etc.
"During the period of the World War, the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company built ships for the U. S. Government.
"Mr. Pew is a member of the Union League of Philadelphia, Merion Cricket Club, Chemists, Racquet, Penn Athletic, Seaview Golf, Springhaven Country and Mid-Ocean of Bermuda. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ardmore, and his business address is 1608 Walnut Street, Philadelphia."
