Notes for Joseph Newton PEW

Joseph Newton Pew, Sr., the founder of the Sun Oil Company, was president of the Peoples Natural Gas Company in Pittsburgh, Pa.., when in 1886, the company acquired leases for oil explorations in western Ohio. This complex, which included a refinery, pipelines and storage tanks, became known as the Sun Oil Company.
In 1921, the Pews took advantage of the biggest oil strike up to that time which occurred at Spindletop, Texas. They purchased the oil field and started to look for a port site where they could ship the crude oil by water. The area they selected was a barren tract along the Delaware River, called Marcus Hook, about 20 miles south of Philadelphia. A refinery was built which was convenient to shipping, railroads and pipelines.
