Notes for Joseph Newton III PEW
Joseph N. Pew III, 88, of Gladwyne, an engineer and grandson of the founder of Sun Oil Co., died of cardiopulmonary complications Wednesday, March 23, at Lankenau Hospital.
In 1947, he became an engineer for Sunoco. His grandfather Joseph N. Pew incorporated the company in 1880.
Joseph Pew III served for much of his life on the boards of the Pew Charitable Trusts, established by his family in 1948, and the Glenmede Trust Co. In 1956, he was one of the founding members of Glenmede, which evolved into an investment management services company.
"His opinions, always highly valued, were delivered with a deliberate thoughtfulness and clarity," his children wrote in a tribute.
Mr. Pew graduated from the Haverford School. He attended Stanford University, where he met his future wife, Doris Myers.
They married in 1944, while he was on leave while serving in the Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Stanford.
Mr. Pew was an avid small-plane pilot and golfed at Merion Golf Club.
He loved fishing and bird hunting, especially at his summer home in the Poconos, and horseback riding in the Arizona high desert.
Mr. Pew's wife died in 2006. He is survived by sons Joseph IV, Howard, Thomas and James; daughters Doris Scott and M. Catharine; a sister; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave.
