Notes for William MURPHY

William , youngest son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Ebbert) Murphy , was born at Mount Braddock, Pennsylvania , January 5, 1805 , died April 30, 1860 . He spent his early years on the present site of the Second National Bank of Uniontown , moving to the present home of the family in North Union township . He engaged extensively in stock dealing operations with great success. A story is told of a mare which he owned and to which he became greatly attached. The mare, so the story runs, became so old that she lost all her teeth and was unable to feed herself, yet in spite of her feebleness and longevity, so great was his affection for her that she was fed a mash of corn meal which required no mastication. His tender heartedness in the case of the mare was found in all his dealings with men, and his readiness to go on the bond of a friend or even an acquaintance led him into such dire financial troubles that the latter part of his life was spent in straitened circumstances.
