Notes for James Samuel WADSWORTH

He studied law at Albany in the office of Daniel Webster, admitted to the bar 1833, but never practised, his attention being given to the management of his estates. When the Civil War broke out, he offered his services without delay. He was commended for bravery at the first battle of Bull Run, being an aide on the staff of General McDowell. Appointed brigadier-general of volunteers Aug. 9, 1861, and in March, 1862, was assigned to duty as military governor of the District of Columbia. In December he was given command of a division under General Burnside. He commanded the 1st Division, 1st Army Corps, under General Reynolds at the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He died May 8, 1864, of wounds received in the battle of the Wilderness.
