Notes for Moses MOORE

Capt. Moses Moore, brother of Capt. Ely, was born at Pennington, and was one of the patriots of Old Hopewell. He was First Lieutenant in Capt. John Hunt's Co., First Regiment, Hunterdon County, May 10, 1777, and later was enrolled in Capt. John Phillips' Co. Third Regiment. He was in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Monmouth and perhaps others, and at one time was in command of a company of "Jersey Blues." He married Elizabeth, daughter of Chreinyonce Van Cleve, and sister of Col. John, of Hopewell. They removed to Sussex County, N. J., and among their children were John Van Cleve, sheriff of Sussex, and Hon. Ely Moore, who was elected a member of Congress from New York City in 1834, served two terms and held important government positions under successive administrations until his death in 1860.
