Longtime artist, 91
Elva Cope Garrett, 91, an artist who specialized in landscapes and flowers, died of pneumonia Sunday at Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, a retirement community.
Mrs. Garrett formerly lived in Drexel Hill, Westtown, and the Society Hill section of Philadelphia.
She graduated from Westtown School in 1928 and two years later from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Early in her career, Mrs. Garrett designed dresses, her family said. Later, she turned to her favorite subjects: landscapes and flowers in watercolors.
Mrs. Garrett held several solo exhibitions and sold some of her works. She was still painting until two years ago, when she suffered a stroke, her family said.
Surviving are sons Arthur S. 2d and G. Spencer; a daughter, Ethel G. Steinhauser; a sister; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband of 38 years, George S., died in 1971.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at Kendal at Longwood. Burial will be private.
