Notes for John GORSUCH
John Gorsuch, Anglican Rector of Walkern in Hertford married Anne Lovelace, daughter of Sir William Lovelace, Knight of Bethersden, Kent, and his wife Anne Barne. Anne Lovelace was the sister of Richard Lovelace, the poet and cavalier, and of Colonel Francis Lovelace, the Governor of New York. The Rev. John Gorsuch was an aggressive Royalist. The Parliamentary Party filed charges against John Gorsuch, Rector of Walkern, typical of trumped up charges against hundreds of inoffensive clergymen who were persecuted and deprived of their livings. Killed by the Puritans in England in 1647, his wife, Anne, and sons Richard, Charles, Robert and Lovelace emigrated to Virginia about 1652, and became converts to Quakerism there. They were of a group of Quakers driven out of Lancaster county, Virginia by Governor Berkely . The family moved to Maryland, settling on the north side of the Patapsco River, where the city of Baltimore now stands.
