Notes for Ebenezer HOPKINS
Ebenezer Hopkins, son of Benjamin and Sarah (Haddon) Hopkins, came to America, and was adopted by his mother's sister Elizabeth (Haddon) Estaugh.
Elizabeth (Haddon) Estaugh, born in 1682, came to New Jersey in 1701 to look after extensive properties purchased by her father John Haddon, who remained in England. She built at Haddonfield, and married John Estaugh in 1702. She and her father donated the land for the Haddonfield Quaker meeting. Her sister and she inherited her father's estate. John Estaugh died in 1742, leaving his estate to his wife. Elizabeth died in 1762. They had no children. Her long informative will, 1761 Gloucester Co., NJA 33:135-7, left her real estate principally to the children of her deceased nephew Ebenezer Hopkins. John Gill had been her trusted advisor.
In 1746 Ebenezer Hopkins was deeded 117 acres on the south side of Coopers creek, formerly Francis Collins'. In 1752 Elizabeth Estaugh deeded to Ebenezer property fronting Coopers creek, formerly James Whitall's and John Eastlack's.
After Ebenezer's death, his widow Sarah resided with Elizabeth Estaugh.
