Notes for Caleb Cresson WISTAR

Caleb Cresson (C. Cresson) Wistar, son of Bartholomew Wyatt and Annabella Elliott (Cresson) Wistar; he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1846, and died in Germantown, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1916. Ne attended the Friends' Select School in Philadelphia and completed his education at Haverford College, graduating in the class of 1865. While there he was much interested in cricket and initiated the style of round-arm bowling in that game. After leaving college he became connected with the Fidelity Trust Company of Philadelphia, and was also interested in life insurance, remaining in these occupations for a short time. A man of initiative ans enterprise, Mr. Wistar established a wholesale lubricating oil business in Philadelphia. Apart from his business, Mr. Wistar took an active interest in the affairs of his city. For many years he was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Germantown Cricket Club. He served as secretary of the board of managers pf Howard Hospital, Philadelphia, for more than twenty-five years. He was a member of the board of directors of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia. He was a member of the Science and Art Club of Germantown, and the Site and Relic Society of Germantown, now the Germantown Historical Society. On November 22, 1876, Mr. Wistar married, in Philadelphia, Mary Emlen Cresson. Their children were: 1. Wyatt, born October 14, 1877, died January 29, 1886. 2. Frederic Vaux, born in Philadelphia, December 3, 1878. 3. Caleb Cresson, Jr., born at Philadelphia, October 5, 1880; married, September 15, 1917, at Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Rebecca A. Lycett, daughter of Edward Howes and Anna (Fox) Lycett. He died June 7, 1931. Their children were: i. Emlen Vaux Wistar, born August 12, 1920. ii. Caleb Cresson Wistar, III, born March 21, 1922. These children were educated at William Penn Charter School of Philadelphia, St. George's School, Newport, Rhode Island, and the University of Pennsylvania. 4. Elizabeth Vaux, born in Philadelphia, November 11, 1883.
