Notes for William 2nd SELLERS
William Sellers 2d, 95, of Strafford, a former manufacturer and sportsman who once dined with Amelia Earhart, died Saturday at the Dunwoody Village Nursing Unit in Newtown Square.
Mr. Sellers owned and piloted a plane in the '20s and '30s.
He once had a dinner date with Amelia Earhart, who was in Philadelphia for a speaking engagement. When he showed up at the Barclay Hotel in his old Ford jalopy, the police refused to let him stop. They allowed him to send in a note.
Back came a note from Earhart saying, "Of course, I'm dining with Mr. Sellers, a fellow pilot - tell him to park, and wait."
He was one of the early licensed ham radio operators, obtaining his license at age 14.
He loved the sea, boats, and sailing in the Maine waters. He also loved hunting, fishing and canoeing in the backwoods of Maine. From 1905 until his death, he never missed spending some part of the summer there.
Mr. Sellers was vice president of William Sellers Co., heavy-machine-tool makers. When the company was sold in 1958, he retired at age 58.
During World War II, he took a leave of absence from Sellers Co. to become manager of the Pusey & Jones shipbuilding company in Wilmington.
Mr. Sellers attended the Haverford School and Princeton University, Class of 1923.
For many years he lived at Rockwood, running the estate for his aunt, Mary Bringhurst, who lived to be 100. Rockwood is now a popular museum in New Castle, Del.
Mr. Sellers also was a former resident of Chestertown, Md., and former owner of Latty's Ledge, a home on Mount Desert Island, Maine.
He was an honorary member of the First Troop City Cavalry.
He was a member of the Merion Cricket Club and the Radnor Hunt Club.
Mr. Sellers is survived by his wife of 25 years, Annah-Colket McKaig Sellers; sons, Burton C. and Richard; stepdaughter, Joannah Colket Hall Glass; one sister; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at noon tomorrow at Old St. Davids Church, 763 Valley Forge Rd., Wayne, Pa. Burial is private in the churchyard.
