Barton L. Mackey, D.M.D.
Wilmington, Delaware – Barton Levis Mackey, D.M.D., 85, died Wednesday, October 3, 2018.
Bart is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eugenie Lewis Mackey; his children Barton, Jr. (Jennifer), Eugenie M. McDonald (Mathew), Dwight D., Scott L. (Betsy); nine grandchildren – Tucker, Tyler, Emily, Matt, Bart (III), Morgan, Zoe, Miles and Althea; and his brother, David.
Born and raised on Main Street in Newark, Delaware, he was the eldest son of Barton Hirst Mackey and Hester Cannon Levis Mackey. Bart was a Delawarean with a heritage dating to Colonial times.
He was a graduate of Newark High School, Franklin & Marshall College, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. On his path toward dentistry, he served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and worked for the DuPont Company.
Bart was a Dentist who took great pride in detail, solutions, and a happy smile. After his retirement he truly missed his relationships with his patients.
He was a baseball coach, ice hockey referee, ocean racer, a life-long body surfer at Bethany Beach. Bart took great pride and interest in sharing his expertise and experiences with all. He was an ardent supporter of his children’s sporting endeavors and achievements.
He was a member of the Delaware State Dental Society (past president), Ducks Unlimited (Brandywine Chapter), Safari Club International, National Rifle Association, Society of Colonial Wars in Delaware, Wilmington Club, and Wilmington Country Club.
Bart was level headed, had a kind heart, and had a strong work ethic. The twinkle in Bart’s eyes and his gentle humor will be greatly missed. A special thank you goes to the caring crew at the Stonegates Health Center.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. The internment will be private. In Bart’s memory please consider supporting a deserving cause or a random act of kindness.
