Graverobbers Take DuPont In-Law's Skull

Body Disturbed In Wilmington Mausoleum

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Authorities in Wilmington say the skull that was taken this week from a vandalized mausoleum belonged to a woman with ties to the du Pont family.

Creepy Theft From Crypt

Helen Rogers Bradford was 80 years old when she died in July 1944. She was laid to rest three days later in a family mausoleum at Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.

Bradford's late sister, Annie Rogers, was the second wife of William du Pont, who died in 1928.

According to her obituary, Bradford's only living relatives at the time of her death included her nephew, William du Pont Jr.

William was the father of John du Pont -- who was found guilty of fatally shooting Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz in 1997, but was declared incompetent.

Wednesday's theft is the second missing-skull case in less than a year. In November, thieves took a skull from a crypt at Riverview Cemetery.

Richard Tindall, the cemetery supervisor, said he was tending the cemetery grounds early Wednesday morning when he was shocked to discover the crypt had been broken into.

"Somehow they cracked the vault open and they actually proceeded to break into the casket," Tindall said.

Tindall and police said they believe the crime occurred at night.

"They didn't actually take the lid off the casket. They broke through. It was an old wooden casket. So they just, somehow, smashed the top of it off," Tindall recalled.
