Notes for Elizabeth Randolph GAWTHROP

Elizabeth Randolph (Gawthrop) Canby Bush passed away on November 13, 2007 after a short illness.

She was born in Wilmington on November 1, 1916. The daughter of Belle McGill Gawthrop and Alfred Gawthrop, 'Didi', as she was known, was educated at Tower Hill School, from which she graduated in 1934. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and was a member of the class of 1936. She spent the following academic year in Mexico City studying Spanish. Upon her return, she worked at Bird Speakman ladies' clothing store and in 1938 she married Henry Mathews Canby. With the exception of 2 years in Memphis, TN during WWII, Didi lived in Wilmington her whole life. She served on the Women's Auxiliary Committee of Trinity Church for many decades. During the 1960's she was the president of the Wilmington Girls' Club. She was also an active member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Wilmington Garden Club. A member of the Wilmington Country Club until late in her life, Didi was an accomplished, sometimes champion, tennis player. She also enjoyed working in her garden and flower arranging. Didi loved being with her friends and family and all social occasions. Her graciousness never abandoned her. Following the death of Henry Canby in 1971, Didi married Henry T. Bush, Jr., of Wawaset Park in 1974. They later moved to Cokesbury Village, Hockessin where Didi was residing at the time of her death.

She is survived by 3 daughters, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to commemorate the life of Didi Bush will be held at Trinity Church, Wilmington on December 7, 2007 at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to Community projects of the Garden Club of Wilmington, PO Box 3855, Wilmington, DE 19807.
