Col. Thomas V. Kessler, a resident of Pensacola since 1890, passed away yesterday morning at 4 o'clock at Hollywood, his bayshore home, death coming after a lingering illness and was due to valvular heart trouble. He had reached the advanced age of 70 years and had a wide circle of acquaintances among the prominent men of the city and state, and his death will be generally regretted.
Col. Kessler was a native of Philadelphia where he acquired his education, engaging in the manufacture of fertilizer when a young man and was still in the business at the time of his death being a stockholder and officer of the Goulding Fertilizer works. The family of the deceased traced its genealogy back to colonial days. His grand-father, John Kessler, was a midshipman aboard the frigate Alliance and fought through the revolutionary war in the patriot navy.
The deceased came to Pensacola over twenty years ago from Baltimore, accepting the position of manager of the Goulding Fertilizer works, which was established here then by William Goulding of Dublin, Ireland. The deceased later acquired a large part of the stock, but during the past few years of his life had not been actively engaged in the business, but left its management in a large degree to his son, W. D'C. Kessler.
Col. Kessler was prominent throughout the state, serving for a number of years on the governor's staff, as president of the Chamber of Commerce and as a member of various business organizations. He was a Mason of high rank and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
The deceased is survived by his wife, one son and four daughters, as follows: W. D'C. Kessler, Pensacola; Mrs. G.H. McManus, San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Jas. Bushong, Charlestown, W. Va.; Mrs. Norris Levis, Pensacola, and Miss Mildred Kessler, Montgomery.
The funeral services will be conducted at the First Baptist church this afternoon at 4 o'clock and the internment will be in St. John's cemetery, the Mason rites being observed.
