Notes for James SIMCOCK

James first appears in the 1763 tax list of West Bradford Township, as a single freeman. He is also a single freeman in the 1764 and 1766 tax list of West Bradford and the 1766 to 1769 tax lists of East Bradford. James and Phebe must have married about 1769, for beginning in 1770, he no longer appears as a singleman in the tax lists. He was listed as an inmate (occupant) in the 1770, 1771, 1773, 1774, 1779 and 1780 tax lists of East Bradford. (Tax lists are prepared a year in advance, which is why he appears on the 1780 tax list even though he was dead.)

James was a patriot during the Revolutionary War. He appears as Private 4th Class under the command of Captain John Underwood, on the muster roll of the Chester County Militia, Second Company, East Bradford township. This list is not dated but seems to be from about 1779 . James died in 1779, so possibly he suffered a fatal injury or illness as a result of this service.

James died before 23 Oct 1779, when the inventory of his estate was taken. The administration of the estate of James Simcock of East Bradford township was granted 6 Jul 1781 to Phebe Si mcock, with Jacob Yearsley as surety. On 1 December 1787, Phebe Boak (formerly Phebe Simcock) was commanded by the probate court to submit a settlement account for the estate of James Simcock. Besides the typical household goods, the inventory lists shoemaking tools, which would indicate that James was probably a shoemaker. His son, Emmor, and several grandsons also became shoemakers.

The Records of the Chester County Orphan Court is found the petition of Jacob Yearsley dated 1 March 1786, which states, that his "brother-in-law, James Simcock ... died intestate, leaving a wife (since intermarried) and four children, ... Ann, Emor and James Simcock, being minors under the age of 14 years, and Elias under the age of 21..." William Hauley and Joseph Cope were appointed guardians for the younger children and David Lewis was appointed guardian for Elias.
