Notes for Barbara Anne PFOTZER
Barbara Pfotzer Spackman of Chester Springs Barbara Pfotzer Spackman, 87, passed away on August 26, 2017 at St. Martha’s Manor in Downingtown. Born in Valparaiso, Chile, she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Doris (nee Berryman) Pfotzer. She described herself as Anglo-Chilean, as both her parents were originally from England. She is predeceased by her sister, Jean Pfotzer de Palma, who passed away three years earlier on the same day. A graduate of Santiago College (a high school in Santiago, Chile), she left her home and moved to New York City, where she made many close friends. She attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School and worked as a bilingual secretary at the United Nations. Among her NY friends was Donald Spackman, whose family lived at Hill Farm in Coatesville, PA. Weekends were the time for the group of friends to go to the countryside of Pennsylvania, where Barbara soon fell in love, and left the city life to marry Don’s brother, Charlie. She loved reading and learning, history and the arts, and served as a Park House Tour Guide for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was not until she retired from bookkeeping and accounting that she fulfilled her dream of going to college. At the age of 77 she received a Bachelor of Arts in English Lit., graduating with honors from Bryn Mawr College’s McBride Scholars Program. Following her graduation, Barbara continued on her intellectual journey, taking courses at Widener University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She is survived by Charles T. Spackman, her loving and devoted husband for over 60 years who never wavered in caring for her through illness; her three children, Chad (Patti) Spackman of Chester Springs, Rick (Kate) Spackman of Chester Springs, and Jean (John) Hall also of Chester Springs; and seven grandchildren, Sharpless Hall, Anna Spackman, Averyl Hall, Elizabeth Spackman, Grayson Hall, Donnie Spackman, and Amelia Hall. Her grandchildren loved their “Abuela” for teaching them proper grammar and manners and giving them a worldly perspective in their lives. She loved her American and Chilean nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, and they adored her as well. A memorial service will take place on Sunday, September 3, 11:00 a.m. at Romansville Quaker Meeting, corner of Shadyside and Strasburg Rds., Romansville, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Neighborhood Health Hospice Service
