Notes for Christopher Marshall SLOCUM
Christopher Marshall Slocum, born in Newport, Rhode Island, in the Revolutionary year of 1776, was 10th of the 12 children in his family. Apparently his parents greatly admired a fellow Quaker,
Christopher Marshall of Philadelphia, whose history is elsewhere given, as he seems to have been named for him. At the age of 18 he went to New York City and became a hardware merchant. Even though the Marshall family lived in Philadelphia, the two families were obviously well acquainted, as Christopher Marshall Slocum married Elizabeth Flower Marshall, grand-daughter of his namesake Christopher Marshall.
The young couple may have lived a few years in New York, before moving to Germantown, outside of Philadelphia, where they remained for the rest of their lives. They had eight children.
