Notes for William Bailey III DENHAM
Stonington - William Bailey Denham Jr., 81, of Stonington, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Avalon Health Care Center, Mystic.
He was born in Wilmington, Del., on Sept. 23, 1924, the oldest son of William Bailey Sr. and Suzanne (Speakman) Denham.
He attended Tower Hill School in Wilmington and Westminster School in Simsbury, Conn., and went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army for four years as sergeant first class and was stationed on Tinian Island. He worked for seven years for the DuPont Company in Waynesboro, Va., and Providence, R.I. Upon returning to Delaware, he worked for the Wilmington Country Store in Greenville and from there he moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where he opened his own specialty retail clothing operation, The Denham Country Store.
He married Margaret Springer in Wilmington on Aug. 24, 1968.
An enthusiastic supporter of the arts, he was instrumental in generating a number of solo exhibitions for both promising as well as recognized artists in Florida, Delaware, and Connecticut. For years he was a member of the University of Delaware's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He was also a knowledgeable horticulturist and inveterate ornithologist, two passionate avocations that took him on many outings. Alongside these activities, he excelled as a writer of verse. He was at ease on the golf course, the tennis court, bird hunting, fishing, or enjoying horse racing. He was also a member of the VicMead Hunt Club and the Wadawanuck Club.
In addition to his wife of 38 years, Margaret, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Stewart D. and James Joseph of Stonington; a grandson, Joshua Joseph; a stepson, James MacFadden Dick Marvel of Wilmington, Del.; two brothers; James Scott Denham and Willard Allen Speakman Denham; and a sister, Susanne Denham Singer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service, which will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, in Stonington Cemetery, North Main Street, Stonington. There are no calling hours.
Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, is in charge of arrangements.
His family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The Pilot School Inc., 100 Garden of Eden Road, Wilmington, DE 19803-0198, a school for learning disabled children.
