Notes for James Ashton Jr. BAYARD
James Asheton Bayard, Jr., 69 years old, of Wilmington, Delaware died Wednesday, October 2, 2013.
He attended Wilmington Friends School and was a graduate of Westminster School, Lake Forest College, and St. Mary's University School of Law. He became a member of the Bar in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. His career in the State of Delaware included serving briefly with the Attorney General's Office and the Industrial Accident Board. Most of his thirty year career was spent with the Public Defender's Office. His public service continued in the community where he served on numerous boards and committees including: Old Swedes Foundation, Hagley Museum and Library Residence Committee, The Boys and Girls Club, The Clarence Fraim Senior Center, Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred, Friends of Wilmington Parks, Delaware Greenways, Alapocas Maintenance Corporation, and the Delaware Nature Society. Jim was a true public servant to both the State and community.
He was a member of the Aurora Gun Club, The Wilmington Club, Wantastiquet Trout Club, and Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-four years, Frances Bayard, his daughters Noel Morelli, of Baltimore, MD and Elise Bayard Franklin of Belmont, MA, their husbands Thomas Morelli and Thomas Franklin, four grandchildren, and his siblings: Rufus Bayard, Nancy Bayard, Antonia Phinney, Samuel Bayard.
Jim had a life-long love of gardening and the great outdoors. This passion was sparked during his college years when he worked with a gardener on a large estate. He and Fran spent countless hours together in their own garden, which gave them great pleasure. Later in life, he purchased a family farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. This is where he spent some of his happiest times in retirement; gardening, building, enjoying family and nature. His love of nature and the environment inspired him to put this working farm under conservation easement, so that it will be enjoyed by generations to come.
Pending the arrival of our fifth grandchild, a memorial service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Greenville, Delaware. Interment will be private.
