Notes for Wallace FITZRANDOLPH

Began his career on 18 Apr 1861 as a private in Company F, 17th Pennsylvania Infantry. On 14 May 1861, he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the 5th Artillery, U.S. Army; on 1 Mar 1862, he was brevetted a captain for "gallant and meritorious services in the defense of Winchester, VA." On 13 Mar 1865, he was made a major for "good conduct and gallant services." During the Civil War he was one of the few officers who escaped from Libby Prison at Richmond by means of a narrow underground tunnel. On 28 Jul 1866 he was commissioned a captain; 25 Apr 1888 commissioned major of artillery; 8 Mar 1898 commissioned lieutenant colonel; 27 May 1898 commissioned brigadier general of volunteers; 17 Oct 1899, colonel, First Artillery; 9 Apr 1901 assigned chief of artillery under Army reorganization Act; 27 Feb 1903 brigadier general; 22 Jan 1904, Major general.
