Notes for Lowell Baily COOPER

He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1929 with a degree in chemistry. He served in the United States Marines, 5th division, 28th infantry during WWII. This was the outfit that is most famous for raising the second flag on Iwo Jima as memorialized in possibly the most famous photograph in history. He, however, had been left behind in California to teach chemical warfare and long mourned the buddies he lost at Iwo and Okinawa. He was also a highly regarded philatelist.
