Notes for Eber E. SPEAKMAN

Obituary for Eber Speakman. March 12, 1902.
Eber E. Speakman died in Media Friday night. Mr. Speakman was born 74 years ago in East Goshen Twp., Chester County, and in his younger days was a farmer. About 1848 he married Miss Elizabeth Massey, of Delaware, who survives him. They first resided in Rochdale, and later in Media, where Mr. Speakman worked at shoemaking for eighteen years, and during the Civil War, with Charles R. Williamson. The family was removed to Morton, where Mr. Speakman carried on the trade of shoemaking and repairing for several years. He later conducted a shop at Swarthmore, moving from there to South Media, and thence to the county seat. Throughout Mr. Speakman has been a devout Christian and as a Christian he died. For years he was the custodian of what is now the First M. E. Church, of Media, and was later an official in Kedron M. E. Church, of Morton. He was baptized in early youth, and since residing in Media, has attended the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Speakman was the father of thirteen children, nine of whom survive; twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The children are: Charles Speakman, Media; Mary Maginn, Aston Mills; Bartley Speakman, Darby; Eber E. Speakman Jr., Chester; Andrew Speakman, Philadelphia; Mrs. Lucy Sylvester, Wilmington, Del.; Mrs. Harry Elder, Media and Mrs. Edward J. Lindsay, Media.
