Samuel Emlen, the son of Joshua Emlen and Deborah Powel, was one of the most distinguished leaders of the Society of Friends. He made tours as a minister, and for preaching and religious purposes, through Virginia, Ireland, and England, and with others made great efforts to bring about a cessation of hostilities during the Revolution.
