Notes for Samuel Alexander MUDD

Lincoln Assassination Conspirator. The person from which came the old expression 'His name is mud'. Found guilty of conspiracy, aiding and sheltering assassin John Wilkes Booth after setting Booth's broken leg, Mudd was sentenced to life imprisonment. In February of 1869 he was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson for saving the lives of hundreds of prison inmates suffering from yellow fever. Following his pardon, Mudd returned to his home where he continued to practice medicine until his death. (bio by: Ron Greenberg)
