Notes for Doris DUKE

When she was born, newspapers called Doris Duke “the richest little girl in the world.” Doris inherited a vast fortune from her tobacco baron father who warned her on his deathbed to "trust no one." A reluctant public figure, Doris avoided publicity and turned down requests for interviews. During her lifetime Doris would increase her father's fortune fourfold. Her fortune was so vast, in fact, that when her second husband realized her net worth, he fainted. When she died, her billion-dollar legacy and charitable foundation were left in control of her butler, a semiliterate alcoholic. His claim to the fortune would eventually be overtured by a court's determination that he was unfit to handle such an important charity.
