Notes for CHRISTIAN MARKLE:
After the first three children were born and baptized at the Moselem Lutheran Church, the family migrated to Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and later to Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where they settled. His occupation was a sawer in charge of Eckert Mill. He paid taxes in Milton, Pennsylvania in 1818, as also did his son, John. They were the ancestors of the coal mining Markles of Hazleton, Pennaylvania. Christian served his country during the Revolutionary War as a Captain and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. His military record is found in the Pennsylvania Archives, 5th Series, Vol. V,P. 167. Christian was an ensign of the 1st. Battalion, 3rd Company, under Col. Hunter, Captain Jacob Rothermel and Lieutenant Daniel Stoudt, the latter being his brother-in-law, as of May 10, 1780.
In Book Volume 2, Page 297, in the Recorder of Deeds Office of the Court House in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, we find a land transaction between Christian Markle and his wife, Maria, of Cattawissa Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and Anthony Musegenug and Michael Werlin, both of Maxatawny Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, for 800 pounds, a water corn mill and saw mill known as Catawissey Mills, situated in the said Township of Catawissey, on the southern bank of the creek. Also included in this transaction were three contigious pieces or parcels of land allowed for the use of said mills. This land is bounded on the lands of Georg Hughes, crossing said creek, and thence by land of mill race, containing 10 acres and 4 perches, one of them laid out for a mill race containing 1-1/2 acres. It being part of the 280-1/4 acres which Honorable Proprietors, on February 14, 1770, granted to Edward Shippen, Jr. and Joseph Shippen, Jr. who, on May 1, 1773, sold to Elias Hughes, who, with his wife, Hannah, sold 100 acres to John Hughes on June 20, 1776.
Christian and wife Maria are both buried on the northwest corner of Harmony Cemetery in Milton, Pennsylvania. Inscription on stone. In memory of Christian Markel who was born Mch 18, 1758, died Mch 28 1836 aged 78 yrs & 10 days. He left this world in heart resigned, In hopes
