George and his sister Eleanor (the famous"Nellie" Custis) were adopted by their step-father, General Washington, and spent their youth at Mt. Vernon. As a young man, George W. P. Custis settled on the Arlington estate, which his father had purchased in 1778, and where he built the imposing structure called Arlington House, now know as Lee Mansion. (Virginia Genealogies)
