Notes for Henry IV LEE
Henry, Major, of Virginia, b. 1787, at "Stratford," d. 1837, in Paris, France; served as Major of 12th U.S. Inf. in the War of 1812. In 1829 was appointed by President Jackson U.S. Consul to Palermo, but the Senate rejected it on political grounds, and he returned in 1830; served as private secretary to President Jackson, and as Secretary of Legation to Paris under U.S. Minister Lewis Cass, 1836-37. He m. 1817, Annie R. McCarty, dau. of Daniel and Margaret (Robinson) McCarty, of "Popes Creek."
A historian and author who also served as a speech writer for both John C. Calhoun and presidential candidate Andrew Jackson, also helping the latter to write his inaugural address.
