Notes for Henry III LEE
GEN. HENRY LEE, (Light Horse Harry), , of "Stratford," Westmoreland Co., Va., the eldest son-of Col· Henry and Lucy (Grymes) Lee, of "Leesylvania," b. Jan. 29, 1756, at "Lee-sylvania;" d. March 25, 1818, at Cumberland Island, Ga. He graduated at Princeton, 1773; recruited a Company of Light Horse, of which he was chosen Capt. in 1775; joined Washington's Army in Pennsylvania in 1777; was promoted Major for gallantry in battle Jan., 1778; captured the British at Paulus Hook, N.J., July 19, 1779, for which Congress voted him a gold medal; was with Gen. Green at Guilford Court House, and was more than a match for Tarlton's Dragoons; aided in capture of Forts Watson, Mott and Granby; distinguished himself at Eutaw Springs, Sept. 8, 1781; at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis, Oct. 19, 1781; served as a member of the Virginia Assembly, 1789-91; Governor of Virginia, 1791-94; appointed Major General of the U.S. Troops, 1794, by President Washington to quell the "Whiskey Rebellion" in Pennsylvania; was seriously injured in Baltimore, July 27, 1812, and never fully recovered. In 1817 he visited the West Indies for his health, and on his way home died and was buried at the home of Gert. Green. He wrote and delivered the funeral oration upon President Washington before both Houses of Congress, in which occured these words: "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." He became master of "Stratford," through his first marriage. He m. (first) 1782, his cousin Matilda Lee, b. 1763, at "Stratford;" d. about 1790, at "Stratford," dau. and heiress of Hon. Philip Ludwell and Elizabeth (Steptoe) Lee, of "Stratford," thus uniting the lines of Hon. Thomas Lee, of "Stratford," and Hon. Henry Lee, of "Lee Hall;" m. (second) 1793, Anne Hill Carter, b. 1773; d. 1829; dau. of Hon. Charles and Anne Butler (Moore) Carter, of "Corotoman," and "Shirley."
