Notes for John MCLEMORE

John McLemore was born (c) 1810 in Richland Dist., S. C. He graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in the Spring of 1830, moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1831 and opened a medical office. Moved to Monticello, Fla. in 1833, owned a large plantation there, on Nov. 21, 1835 he announced he had purchased Suwannee Springs and would move there. On Dec. 4, 1835, he was appointed a Captain in the Florida Militia, ordered into service Dec. 4, 1835 and stationed at Suwannee Springs, Dec. 18, 1835, McLemore lead his company into the Battle of Black Point, the company did not perform well in this the first battle of the Second Seminole War. McLemore promoted to Major, he and his company, build a blockhouse on the Withlacoochee River. Construction of the blockhouse controversal. McLemore becomes ill and leaves the blockhouse, his company remains and is forgotten by the U.S. Army. McLemore went to Charles Ferry, on the Suwannee where he is cared for by Mrs. Rebecca Charles, but he dies. Just before he died he wrote a letter to the Governor of Florida resigning from the Militia because of ill health. He left a wife and three children; Victoria, Marcus Cato and John. His will was probated.
