Notes for Walter Horstmann LIPPINCOTT
WALTER LIPPINCOTT, Publisher, received his early education at the Thomas Baldwin Academy, Philadelphia; entered the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1868; left in Sophomore year to travel in Europe a year. On his return in the fall of 1866 entered his father's publishing and bookselling house, J. B. Lippincott & Company, of Philadelphia; became parter in 1868 when only twenty years of age; was very active in the business, so much so that his health broke down in 1881 and he withdrew from active work. When the partnership was changed to an incorporated company in 1885, he became a Director and continues that relation. Is Deputy Governor of the Penn's branch of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and is Vice Commodore of Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia; has declined a number of offers of directorships, etc., on account of his health.
This family was from Devonshire, England. The name is believed to be derived from the Manor of Lovecott or Lovincote in West Devonshire where the eldest branch of the family resided in 1243-1414.
