Notes for Joshua HOOPES

*
June 21, 1809
CHESTER & DELAWARE FEDERALIST

Obituary DIED. On Wednesday the 14th inst., in East Bradford township, << JOSHUA HOOPES>> , aged 75 [?] years - his funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, to Friends burying ground at Goshen, on Friday following. This singular man has been the subject of remark and attention in the neighborhood and country round about for upwards of 50 years. He was a member of the Society of Friends, a peaceful industrious and honest man, without anything remarkable appearing in his manner or mind, until the time this county was the seat of war between Great Britain and the United States - His profession and principles prevented him from paying the heavy taxes and fines necessarily imposed at that distressing period for military purposes; his property of course suffered in a very great degree. - This circumstance was supposed to have some influence in producing that state of derangement for which he was forever afterwards remarkable. He afterwards appeared to withdraw his attention from everything worldly, and in a strange incoherent way would read and preach publicly, almost wherever he could find a few collected together - on subjects not in any wise relating to religion he would appear tolerably rational; but touch the tender string, and his reason wandered quite astray. He lived a life of
sorrow and self denial - He died pitied and respected.
