Notes for Samuel JEWETT

Samuel was previously listed in Jewett Family of America page 223 as "married and died without issue." However, after further research, it has been discovered that Benjamin Jewett, Samuel's father, settled in Sangerfield, New York, and his family were the only Jewetts living in Sangerfield at that time.
In the 1850 census of Cottage Grove, WI, Samuel Jewett lists his state of birth as NH, his age as 61, occupation farmer, real estate value at $2000; Filena (Philenia) was 55, born in Mass. They were next door to the family of Harvey T. Jewett, who was born in New York. The 1860 census shows the two families of Samuel and Horace T. Jewett together, with Samuel age 69, born in New Hampshire, farmer, real estate valued at $7000 and $5000 worth of personal property. In 1870 Samuel and Harvey are again listed in two separate households. Samuel was 79, a farmer with $10,000 worth of real and $1000 worth of personal estate. Philena was 76, keeping house. Living with them were their grandson Franklin Jewett, age 24, born in New York, occupation "at home"; and Lucy Jewett, age 18, also born in New York and "at home." Lucy was Franklin's wife.

Samuel's obituary in the local paper of Waterville, NY, shows his relationship to Sangerfield: "Death of an old resident of Sangerfield. Capt. Samuel Jewett died at his residence in Madison, Wisconsin. Capt Jewett was a prominent citizen of this town for many years. He moved to Wisconsin 24 years ago and settled near Madison, where he lived until a few days before he died, when he moved into the suburbs of the city. He was over 80 years of age, beloved and respected by all who knew him. He was one of the most prominent farmers in the section where he lived (Waterville library). His obituary in the Madison, Wisconsin, State Journal, of 23 January 1871 says, "In Blooming Grove, on Saturday, January 21st, at the residence of his son, Daniel L. Jewett, Mr. Samuel Jewett, aged 80 years. Mr. Jewett was twenty five years a resident of the town of Cottage Grove, and was among the first settlers of the county."

Samuel and Philenia Jewett are buried close to Harvey T. and Hadassah Jewett in Cottage Grove, WI, and the unnamed children of Harvey and Hadassah are listed as heirs in Samuel's will which was dated 28 October 1868. He also named his wife Philenia, giving her the full use of one half of the property for her lifetime. The other half went to Harvey and Hadassah's children with directions that no division of the property be made until the youngest child was twenty one. "The avails of the produce of the farm I leave in trust to the natural mother and father of the aforementioned children to be by them used to bring up the children" and the boys could occupy the property before division as long as all heirs agreed. Friends James Bell, James Drakely, and Hull Jewett were named executors; witnesses were James Bell, Alice J. Davis, and Mary A. Starkes, all of Cottage Grove (Madison, Wisconsin, Library, Genealogy Department; Q53). The son "Daniel," at whose home Samuel died, is not named in the will and is probably a mistake for Harvey.
