Notes for Richard Randolph PARRY
Parry was born in New Hope, Pennsylvania in 1835, the 2nd son of Oliver and Rachel [Randolph] Parry. He was educated at private schools in Philadelphia and at Haverford College. From 1856 to 1862 Richard resided at Mankato, MN where he and his brother, Edward, owned a bank (the first one in the town). During their days in Mankato, the Parry brothers platted an addition to the city that bears their family name. The brothers are mentioned in Neill’s “History of the Minnesota Valley” (1882) and other books about Mankato history.
When Edward joined the army in 1862, Richard returned to Philadelphia to engage in business. He was a member of the Bucks County Historical Society and Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution and a companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the US, commandery of Pennsylvania. Richard Parry was the grandson of Major Edward Randolph, who served in the Revolutionary War. Parry was interested in literature as well as history, and contributed articles to the local press and published works.
