Notes for Alexander Brinton COXE

Mr. Coxe graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1856 and with his brothers, formed Coxe Brother and Co. They began developing their grandfather's vast coal lands.
During the Civil War her served as a captain on the staff of Major General Meade in the Army of the Potomac. He saw action in the Battle of Fredericksburg.
After the war, he returned to Coxe Brothers and saw the business increase in size and wealth. The Coxe brothers were known as benevolent employers, establishing pension plans for their employees and strikes were infrequent.
Alexander survived his brothers and managed the vast holdings alone until six months before his death. At that time, after lengthy negotiations on behalf of his employees, he sold all the properties to the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company.
