Notes for Harry Ellis SPEAKMAN

Harry Ellis Speakman, born Coatesville, Pa., July 20, 1872, died April 28, 1939. He came to Delaware in 1891 to join the Speakman Company, and was secretary in 1904, treasurer 1905, vice-pres. 1921, and also member of the board of directors.
He was active in civic affairs; a member of the Board of Park Commissioners from Oct. 1921 until his death; one of the members of the Speakman Company who gave land for Prices run Swimming Pool; active in Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and as one of the original members of the Vocational and Educational Committee, was instrumental in having old Public School No. 1, converted into a Trade School; was a member of the Board of Directors of Y.M.C.A.; assisted in the founding of the Tower Hill School, of which he was made a trustee in 1928, resigning in 1938 because of ill health; active worker
and former trustee and chairman of St. Andrew's Church, warden in 1927 and treasurer in 1929.
