Notes for Lindsay COATES
Lindsay Coates was a prominent man in the eventful times in which he lived.
Educated as a lawyer, he never practiced at the bar, but made a frequent
beneficent use of his knowledge of it by gratuitous counsels through an extensive vicinity. As senator and in other public offices of trust he enjoyed the confidence of the community. His descendants preserve and value his diploma, received May 1, 1760, from the Academy of Pennsylvania, now known as the University of Pennsylvania. His signature appears on some of the Continental money of that date.
