Notes for Howard PYLE

Howard was an American painter and author. He is especially known for his illustrated books for children. He studied art at a private Philadelphia school and at the New York Students League. For many years he was an illustrator for Harper's Monthly. He taught for a time at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. He had a summer home in Chadds Ford, Pa. and had his studio in an old mill where he taught classes. Among his pupils were N.C.Wyeth and Violet Oakley (known for decorating the walls of the State Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa.). Howard is most known for his books and drawings in "THE MERRY ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD", "PEPPER AND SALT", "THE WONDER CLOCK", and "THE ROSE OF PARADISE". Howard Pyle, and the many artists he brought, made Chadds Ford an art center. In the Chester County Historical Library is a handwritten letter from Mrs. Howard Pyle giving his line of descent.
