Notes for Anna Phebe SHORTLIDGE
Anna Shortlidge Walker began teaching at the age of 16 in Centre Meeting School, near Wilmington, DE, and her brothers and sister owned and conducted boarding schools in Kennett Square, Fairville, Concordville, and Media, PA, and Woodstown, N.J. Her brother, Joseph, was second president of Pennsylvania State College [now University], succeeding his cousin, Evan Pugh; and her brother, Evan, was president of the board of education in Wilmington, DE, until elected mayor. A school at [the] end of Concord Pike in Wilmington was built and dedicated to his memory.
