Notes for Virginia JONES

WIDOW OF PHILA. WRITER, 97 Virginia Jones Lippincott, 97, formerly of Bethayres, the widow of Philadelphia writer and publisher Joseph Wharton Lippincott, died Monday in her sleep at her home in Nokomis, Fla., where she has lived since 1976. She had been in failing health since breaking her hip two months ago.
Mrs. Lippincott was the widow of John Kenneth Mathieson, founding partner in the Philadelphia accounting firm of Mathieson, Aitken & Co., when she married Mr. Lippincott in 1945. Like her husband, she enjoyed outdoor activities, including fishing and hunting - deer in Pennsylvania and big game in Africa. She liked flowers and was a former member of the Huntingdon Valley Garden Club.
Born in Newport, Perry County, Pa., the last of eight children, she was raised by an older sister in Buffalo, N.Y., after her parents died when she was young. She attended Buffalo Seminary, a girls prep school, and graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg.
She is survived by daughters, Mary M. Wood and Joan M. Platt; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private.
