Notes for Joshua Ballinger LIPPINCOTT
JOSHUA BALLINGER LIPPINCOTT, Publisher, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; b. 18th March, 1813, in Juliustown, New Jersey; d. 5th January, 1886. In 1824 went to Philadelphia and was employed in Clark's Book Store; was made manager [p.368] of the business by the assignees when 18 years of age, and in 1836 bought out the business, which became the foundation of the publishing house of J. B. Lippincott & Company, one of the principal houses of the kind in the United States. He was very successful and in 1849 bought out Grigg, Elliot & Company's stock, then the largest book jobbing house in the United States, forming the firm of Lippincott, Grambo & Company, which was dissolved in 1855, and the name of J. B. Lippincott & Company resumed. Under his able management the success of the house continued, passing through the financial crisis of 1857 and 1861 unscathed. In 1868, ?Lippincott's Magazine? was established and has been published uninterruptedly ever since. Among the great works published by this house are ?Lippincott's Gazetteer of the World,? ?Lippincott's Biographical Dictionary,? ?Allibone's Dictionary of Authors,? the American edition of ?Chambers Encyclopaedia,? ?United States Dispensatory,? ?Prescott's Complete Works,? ?Worcester's Dictionaries,? and many important works in every branch of literature. He was a Director at the time of his death in Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, Farmer's and Mechanics Bank, Philadelphia Savings Fund, Pennsylvania Company for Insurance on Lives and Granting Annuities, and Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania; was a member of the Philadelphia, Union League, and Rittenhouse Clubs; m. 16th October, 1845, Philadelphia, Josephine CRAIGE, b. there 1823, d. there 1899, dau. of Seth and Angelina (SHAW) CRAIGE, of Philadelphia.
