Notes for Sydney G. III THAYER
Sydney Thayer 3d, 63, an advertising executive with Life, Sports Illustrated and Smithsonian magazines, died Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He lived at Beaver Dam Farm, Coatesville.
Mr. Thayer was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Devon. He graduated from St. George's School, Newport, R.I., and attended the University of Pennsylvania before entering the military service. He joined the Marines and served in World War II and the Korean War.
He began his career in advertising sales with Aitken-Kynett in Philadelphia. He later moved to Time Inc. and worked with Life and Sports Illustrated. He retired in 1988 after 20 years as an independent sales representative for Smithsonian.
A member of the board of trustees of St. George's School for 25 years, he was named an honorary trustee for his years of service to the board. He also was a longtime member of the board of trustees of Bryn Mawr Hospital. He had recently served as president of the board of the Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital in Paoli.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Bettle Thayer; four children, Sydney Thayer 4th, Meade Barr Thayer, Peter Chapman Thayer and Marian Thayer Gemes; four stepchildren, Frederick Rogers Drayton 3d, Emlen Meigs Drayton, Frances Drayton Ichijo and Edith Drayton Flynn; two sisters; his stepmother, Mrs. Sidney Thayer Jr., and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and Gulph Roads, Bryn Mawr. Interment will be in the churchyard.
