Notes for Walter Satterthwaite HALLOWELL

Walter Satterthwaite Hallowell, formerly of Ambler, now of Foulkeways, Gwynedd, died peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2017. Walt was born on August 25, 1933 to Roger Wharton Hallowell and Dorothy Bowers Hallowell and was raised in Fort Washington. He graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1951 and Earlham College in Richmond, IN in 1955 with a degree in Economics. While a freshmen at Earlham, he and June Stearns met and were married before their senior year.

During his first week at Earlham, Walt went to work part-time at the small local airport, receiving flying lessons as payment. He quickly earned his private pilot’s license and flew extensively around the Midwest. After graduating from Earlham, Walt started his career with his family’s business, Bowers Brothers Co., and later formed his own company, Meccon Assoc. Inc., doing mechanical contracting and consulting.

Walt always enjoyed the family cottage at Lake Paupac Club in the Poconos which continued to be a cherished second home to Walt and June as they raised their children and welcomed grandchildren. A lifelong love of sailing took Walt (occasionally accompanied by June) up and down the eastern seaboard and around the Caribbean, most often to the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.

A longtime member of The Savoy Company, Walt loved the music of Gilbert and Sullivan. He appeared in all thirteen of the G & S operettas from the stage of the Academy of Music in Philadelphia as well as in England with the traveling troupe. Walt’s favorite role was Dick Deadeye in H.M.S Pinafore. He and June sang together for many years as members of the Community Chorus at George School in Newtown, PA.

Walt was a lifelong member of Gwynedd Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. Over the years he served on many committees at the meeting, including the Property, Care and Counsel, and Trustees committees. Walt also served on the board of directors of both Jeanes Hospital and Pennswood Village.

Besides his beloved wife and friend of 62 years, Walt is survived by a brother, Roger Hallowell; his three children: Susan June Hallowell Izzo (Robert), William Stearns Hallowell (Diane), and Thomas Bowers Hallowell (Karen R.); three granddaughters: Phoebe Cunningham Hallowell, Vera Sharpless Hallowell, and Jordan Cathryn Izzo; and former daughter-in-law Karen Suplee Hallowell.

A memorial service is planned for 2 PM on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Foulkeways Auditorium in Gwynedd. Contributions in Walt’s memory may be made to Foulkeways Hospice Fund, 1120 Meetinghouse Rd., Gwynedd, PA 19436.
