Notes for Henry TROTH

Pharmacist. Educator. Abolitionist. He was apprenticed to Jeremiah Morris a druggist. Four years later he began his own business. With another druggist, Peter K. Lehman, he discussed the possibility of a College of Apothecaries. With others, the two men founded the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first pharmacy college in the US. The institution survives today as Philadelphia's University of the Sciences. Troth served in the school's administration and chaired the Board of Trustees for many years until his death. He advocated and helped establish gas light in Philadelphia. He belonged to both the Society for the Abolition of Slavery and the Society for the Colonization of Colored Freedmen. the Abolition of Slavery. He was a manager of the Franklin Institute which was originally founded to foster interest in trades. He was the son of Samuel Troth and Ann Berry, and the husband of Henrietta Henri.
