Notes for Elizabeth Ross BALDERSTON

Elizabeth Ross Balderston, 62, of West Philadelphia, an indefatigable social worker for the elderly, died of complications from breast cancer on April 17 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Born in Chester County and raised in Glen Mills, Delaware County, Miss Balderston graduated from the Westtown School in 1958. She earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1962 and a master's degree in social work in 1974, both from Bryn Mawr College.
She began her 26-year career as an advocate for the elderly at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1974, heading the Committee on Aging. During this time, Miss Balderston volunteered with Quaker groups supporting older people. The Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly honored her in 2002 for 25 years of service.
She also helped the elderly with housing, medical and social issues through the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging for more than a quarter of a century. She volunteered as a counselor at the Philadelphia Community School, a West Philadelphia network for children whose parents are in counseling, and was active in the Female Society for the Relief and Employment of the Poor.
Miss Balderston, who went by her maiden name, was a member of Goshen Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Dainis Bisenieks; a son, Hilary Bisenieks; and four sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. May 15 at Friends Meeting, Fourth and Arch Streets. Memorial donations may be sent to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Friends Center, 1515 Cherry St., Philadelphia 19102.
