Notes for Isaac Tatnall II STARR

I. Tatnall Starr 2d, 66, of Lafayette Hill, a philanthropist, fly fisherman and partner at Mitchell, Sinkler & Starr investment firm in Philadelphia, died of thyroid cancer Saturday at Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor.
Mr. Starr began his career in finance with the former Drexel Harriman & Ripley firm, but executives at the competition spied his budding talent and soon snagged Mr. Starr for their firm, then Mitchell & Sinkler.
He worked his way up to a partnership and also began fashioning a roster of charity work that included chairing boards of the Natural Lands Trust and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.
Mr. Starr approached his endeavors with what his son William described as studied "intentionality." Mr. Starr was a daily list maker who checked off each task accomplished during the course of the day.
He was born in Laverock and graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University; a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania; and served as a Navy officer on the USS Little Rock.
He married Mary Detweiler Starr in 1965.
Mr. Starr was known as "Tat" to friends and family. Outside the office, he could never get enough fly fishing and was skilled at assembling his own "fly" bait, because in his estimation, a fish caught with something purchased from a store "didn't count."
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Starr is survived daughters Emily and Elise; three sisters; and four grandchildren.
